PHILLIPSBURG, St. Maarten, July 23, 2015 - St. Vincent and the
Grenadines (SVG) females crushed rivals St. Maarten in
convincing fashion when the two met in second match of the ECVA
Junior Females Championship. They defeated them in straight sets
25-16, 25-14 and 25-22.
The only real resistance came in the third set went the home
team was able to draw level late in the game but The St. Vincent
females held their nerve and won comfortably.
St. Vincent doubled St. Maarten 22-11 in the spikes column and
swamped them in service points (12-1) but trailed 1-4 in the
blocks category. From the total points gained St. Vincent and
the Grenadines had more than 50% of them donated to them through
opponents’ error.
On the individual level it was Outside Hitter Shemel Bowne of
St. Vincent who was the highest scorer of the night with 12
points. Browne poured down 11 kills from those 12 points. On the
losing side Thiona Williams (Middle Blocker) had 3 kills in a
total of 4 points to end as the leading scorer for the losers.
“This victory felt good because we were short of match practice
coming into the tournament and hence it was heartening and
somewhat surprising to note that they played so hard. In the
third game they relaxed a bit and I had to urge them on
indicating that the game is far from over”, said coach of the St
Vincent team Cassius Franklyn.
His captain Jolecia Olliverre concurred with her coach. “After
winning the first two quite easily we felt as if the third game
would be handed to us. It was only after a hard talk from the
coach that we got our heads in the game and finished well” she
said.
Coach Henrietta of St. Maarten was upbeat in spite of the
straight set defeat. “I felt proud of these girls who showed me
they are really committed to play and for their first time in a
major tournament I think they did well”, he said. “They are not
happy with the defeat and have requested an extra practice to
ensure that they do much better in their next game”, he
intimated. |
