Tough battle in ECVA Female Qualifier

ST JOHNS, Antigua - June 16, 2018 – A total of five games were played during the preliminary phase of the competition that saw five teams competing. Based on the form displayed it is still not yet clear who will walk away with that coveted opportunity to play in Argentina.

Grenada with Nikili Belfon and Rachel Phillip surprised everyone when they stopped Antigua/Barbuda (Josanne Lewis and Aleah Alfred) in straight sets (21-19 21-17) in the first match of the day.

Antigua/Barbuda  recovered from that loss and put away St. Vincent and the Grenadines (Sherese Cyrus and Hollyanne George)  in domineering fashion (21-15 and 21-7).

The group became all entangled in the points category as George and Cyrus found some good momentum in a 2 sets to 1 victory (21-13, 17 -21 and 15 -3) over Belfon and Phillip of Grenada.

The officials were forced to go to the tie breaker system and found that Antigua Barbuda had the best points differential and hence topped the group. St. Vincent and the Grenadines was second and Grenada third.

.

Group B which had only two teams saw St. Lucia - Tenayestlgni Joseph and Zadie St. Luce getting the better of Ethlyne Lockhart and Adicia Burton of Dominica in straight sets (21-17 and 21-17).

This meant that Grenada had to play against Dominca in the only crisscross quarter finals. By that time Grenada had faded both physically and mentally hence they wilted under the pressure of the Dominicans   -  (21-13 and 21-9).

By virtue of that result the female semifinals are set. St. Lucia versus St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Antigua/Barbuda versus Dominica. Both games will be played simultaneously at 11 am on Sunday 17th . The finals will be contested along with the third place game in the afternoon.
