WILLEMSTAD, Curacao, July 10, 2015 - Trinidad and Tobago got off
the mark with a hard-fought 18-25, 25-16, 25-21, 23-25, 15-8
triumph over their hosts in the second of four matches on the
second and final day of round-robin action in the CAZOVA Youth
Girls’ Championships.
The victory was achieved in 131 minutes, just four minutes less
than it had taken Curacao to nose out Bonaire in another
pulsating five-setter, which ended close to midnight, the night
before.
Nicolette De Mille was the dominant attacker as the T&T skipper
poured in 23 points, -- including 13 kills, eight service
winners and two blocked shots.
Compatriot Tsyan Selvon chipped in with ten points, the same
amount as the only other players to reach double figures,
Esseline Brunkard and Dangela Maduro of Curacao.
The hosts had more spikes winners (30-25), but the defending
champions had the significant advantage (19-11) in service
winners and had the edge (7-6) in blocked shots.
The victory was crucial for T&T as the champs in all three
previous editions of the tournament were defeated in straight
sets by Barbados in the opening match the day before.
However since the under-18 match conclude around 2 p.m., it left
them with just four hours to recover before coming back to
tackle Bonaire in the first match of the night session.
Curacao will face Barbados, winners of their two matches without
dropping a set, two hours later. |
