USA Men sweep Cuba and Canada falls to Netherlands to start third week
of VNL
July 05, 2023.- The United States and Cuba in Anaheim and Canada in
Pasay City, Philippines kicked off their third and final phase of the
men’s Volleyball Nations League on Wednesday.
Canada played Netherlands to a 1-3 loss (22-25, 22-25, 25-17, 18-25)
today. While Canada capitalized on an error-prone Netherlands (29-17),
the European team led in attack points (62-47) and slightly led Canada
in service aces and blocking points. Stats here.
Dutch opposite Nimir Abdel-Aziz led all scorers with 24 points (22
attack points; 2 aces); while Ryan Sclater led Canada with 20 (18 on
attack, 2 aces).
Netherlands is fighting for a spot in the top eight to advance to the
quarterfinals. Canada has two wins so far in VNL and is working toward
maintaining a spot in next year’s tournament.
Canada faces Italy (July 6), Poland and China this week.
United States swept NORCECA rival Cuba 3-0 (27-25, 25-17, 25-15). USA
led 38 to 30 in attacking points, 7 to four in points from blocks and
8-2 in aces.
Matt Anderson and Aaron Russell led the U.S. with 13 and 12 points
respectively. Miguel Angel López led Cuba with 12, followed by Jesús
Herrera with 11.
Cuba goes up against Serbia (July 6) and USA faces Argentina (July 7).
