USA Opens U21 Pan American Cup with
Straight-Set Victory over Venezuela
COLUMBUS, Ohio, July 7, 2026. – Defending champion United States
opened its quest for a fourth consecutive title with a
convincing 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-15) victory over Venezuela in
Pool A on the opening day of the 2026 NORCECA Women’s U21 Pan
American Cup at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio.
The Americans controlled the match from start to finish,
although Venezuela offered its strongest resistance in the
second set before the United States regained control to close
out the match in straight sets. The U.S. led in attacks (47-23),
blocks (5-3), and service aces (4-2).
Abigail Vander Wal paced the United States with 13 points,
followed by Manaia Ogbechie with 9 and Payton Petersen with 8.
Venezuela was led by match-high scorer Ainhoa Molleja with 16
points, while Anarela Mejías added 7.
Tama Miyashiro, United States head coach: "It was an enjoyable
match for us because we've been training for a long time, and
finally putting on the jersey and competing was exciting. Credit
to Venezuela, they showed us things we hadn't seen before, which
put us under pressure and forced us to respond."

very strong opponent. The United States always has talented
players. We approached the match determined to play our best,
knowing this experience will help us continue to grow throughout
the tournament."
