USA and Canada each qualify two beach teams to Rio

 

   

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, June 12, 2016 – USA and Canada have two women’s teams qualified to the beach volleyball tournament of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games following the completion of the 18-month Beach Volleyball Olympic qualification process via the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour.

 

Kerri Walsh/April Ross and Lauren Fendrick/Brooke Sweat will represent USA in the 24-team tournament while Sarah Pavan/Heather Bansley and Jamie Broder/Kristina Valjas will compete for Canada.

 

Walsh/Ross finished atop of the qualified teams with 6,670 points. The team of Pavan/Bansley was third with 6,150. Broder/Valjas qualified in the eleventh position with 4,640 and Fendrick/Sweat finished with 4,470 in 13th place.

 

The 15 highest ranked teams –plus two from hosts Brazil- on the Olympic Ranking as of June 13, 2016 each earn one quota place for their NOC/NF to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, respecting the maximum of two quota places per NOC/NF.

 

The total number of teams playing in Rio will be 24. The final seven spots will include five spots from the winners of the Continental Cup competition within the five FIVB confederations.
