GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands, April 25, 2015 - USA and Canada
will each have a team in the women’s finals of the 2015 NORCECA
Beach Volleyball Circuit Tour opener after setting all semifinal
encounters with respective countrywomen at the end of
quarterfinal matches at the Seven Miles Beach, on Saturday.
In the women’s semifinal from 10.30am on Sunday, USA-A Traci
Weamer and Kendra Vanzweiten comes up against USA-B’s Jenny
Kropp and Whitney Pavlik, while in the other half of the draw,
Canada-A pair, Claudia Seguin and Alexandra Poletto faces
Canada-B’s, Julie Gordon and Brandie Wilkerson.
Weamer and Vanzweiten, who won silver in Antigua, Guatemala last
year, booked a place in the last four by first beating
Nicaraguans Elia Machado and Lolette Rodriguez 21-12, 21-10 in
their final Pool A match for a 3-0 record following by a
comprehensive dismissal of Trinidad and Tobago’s Apphia Glasgow
and La Teisha Joseph, who were second in Pool B, 21-1, 21-5.
Glasgow and Joseph started the day with a 21-14, 23-21 win over
Panama’s Kilary Perez and Hashlyn before losing to Seguin and
Poletto in their pool decider, 12-21, 17-21 for a 3-1 record.
Kropp and Pavlik swept aside St Lucians Dania Hamilton and Kerin
Vincent 21-10, 21-10 to top Pool D with a perfect 3-0 mark and
then outlasted Costa Ricans, Natalia Alfaro and Karen Cope
23-21, 21-13 in their quarterfinal.
Alfaro and Cope ended second in Pool C after whipping Hondurans,
Gina Flores and Martha Euceda 21-8, 21-8 to end with a 2-1 mark,
and behind Gordon and Wilkerson.
Seguin and Poletto remained unbeaten with round-robin Pool B
victories against Cayman Islands-A Ileann Powery and Chante
Smith-Johnson 21-12, 21-9, and then got the better of a stubborn
Puerto Rico duo of Lina Bernier and Eva Torruella 21-19, 21-18.
Bernier and Torruella were second in Pool A with a 2-1 record
thanks to a 21-15, 21-13 beating of Cayman Islands-B, Jessica
Wolfeden and Stefania Gandolfi.
Gordon and Wilkerson made certain of topping their Pool C via a
21-12, 21-17 beating of Jamaicans Sasha-Lee Wallen and then
withstood a strong battle with Cuba’s reigning Central American
and Caribbean (CAC) Games gold medallist, Lianma Flores and
Leila Martinez 21-19, 17-21, 15-8.
Flores and Martinez were second in Pool D after getting past
Guatemalans’ Natalia Giron and Estafanie Bethancourt, 21-12,
21-15 for a 2-1 mark.
