MATSUMOTO, Japan, August 24, 2015 – Reigning world champions the
United States swept China 3-0 here Monday evening in a repeat of
the 2014 FIVB World Championship final match.
Recovering from an upset full-set loss to Serbia the night
before, the American women collected the 25-23, 25-17 and 25-23
victory and improved their win-loss record to 2-1.
The Chinese women, who had lost to the American team 3-1 to
finish runners-up in last year’s World Championship, had their
two-game winning streak snapped.
The United States overpowered the Chinese women as they made 55
kills, compared with 38 for China. Karsta Lowe led the United
States with 16 points with Kimberly Hill and Foluke Akinradewo
adding 14 and 11 respectively. Zhu Ting led the Chinese scoring
with 17 and Zhang Changning added 14.
In Tokyo, the
Dominican Republic hitters prevailed in a tight scoring contest
against Argentina 3-1 (25-21, 25-22, 19-25, 25-15) to
claim their second victory.
The Dominicans had a productive scoring output as four players
scored in double figures. Prisilla Rivera scored 15 points,
Yonkaira Pena and Gina Mambru had 14 points apiece, and Marianne
Fersola scored 13 points for the Dominican Republic. Emilce Sosa
and Josefina Fernandez scored 13 points each for Argentina.
Also in Tokyo, Sarina Koga made a huge effort to lift Japan
to gain a 3-0 (25-15, 25-12, 25-16) win over Cuba .
Koga topped all scorers with 19 points, while Miyu Nagaoka added
14 points for Japan. Cubans Sulian Matienzo and Alena Rojas
scored 10 and nine points, respectively. |
