SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, September 9, 2021 – United States claimed the bronze medal at the Men’s Volleyball Pan American Cup after defeating host Dominican Republic 3-1 (25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 25-15) on Thursday.

It is the first bronze medal for the American team in the history of the competition after winning five gold medals and two silvers. The Dominicans lost their fourth match in a row after winning the first three of the event.

Merrit McHenry topped the scoring for USA with 18 points, including a tournament-high 8 blocks. Cole Gillis and Daniel Wetter followed with 14 and 12, respectively, while Grant Sloane and Ethan Champlin chipped in with 10 points apiece.

Alexis Cruz and Henry Tapia carried the load of the Dominican offense with 23 and 20 points, respectively.

Andy Read, coach of United States: “It was a very competitive tournament. We were lucky to bring good boys and being able to move all them around in all the matches while playing volleyball at a high level. I am glad about taking home the bronze medal which is their first at international level for some of my players and that’s a great thing.”

José Mañon, coach of Dominican Republic: “It was a good tournament. We are at their same level, more or less. Our guys need to play more in order to get more experience in difficult situations and then we will be able to play at the same level with those strong teams.”
