HOFFMAN ESTATES, USA, June 15, 2015 – USA edged Poland in their
five-set encounter in Pool B of the FIVB Volleyball World League
at the Sear’s Centre Arena on Friday to extend their winning
streak to five victories without losses.
Matthew Anderson and Murphy Troy scored 20 and 17 points,
respectively, to help USA gain control of the fifth set after
trailing Poland and win 3-2 (23-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 15-9).
In Havana, Cuba, Captain Rolando Cepeda scored 21 points to lead
Cuba to a 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 20-25, 25-21) win over Argentina in
Pool C, to earn their first home victory.
In Summerside, Canada, Danail Milushev’s 17 points lifted
Bulgaria to a thrilling five-set (20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 27-25,
15-12) triumph over hosts Canada in Pool C.
Canada’s Gavin Schmitt could not top Milushev’s performance and
only produced 15 points on a losing effort.
In Podgorica, Montenegro, Turkey took a 3-2 (25-18, 24-26,
25-20, 21-25, 15-10) win over Puerto Rico in a tournament in
Montenegro. The European side were stunned twice in the second
and fourth set by the Puerto Ricans, but raced to the victory in
the decider.
Metin Toy led Turkey with 16 points. Maurice Torres had a
match-high 19 points for Puerto Rico while Hector Soto (15) and
Jackson Rivera (14) also scored in double figures in the loss.
In Tepic, Mexico, Greece escaped a thrilling five-set encounter
with Mexico 3-2 (20-25, 21-25, 25-21, 25-19, 16-14) in Pool G.
Athanasios Protopsaltis made 13 points, including three blocks
and a service ace to help Greece in their comeback. Mexico’s
Jorge Barajas also had 13 points while Tomas Aguilera, Daniel
Vargas and Julian Duarte finished with 11 apiece. |
