HIROSHIMA, Japan, September 8, 2015 – USA put on a serving
masterclass, with five players registering at least one ace each
as the world No.5 took a straight sets (25-23, 25-12, 25-15) win
over Australia in their opening match of the FIVB Volleyball
Men’s World Cup Japan 2015 in Hiroshima on Tuesday.
Aaron Russell scored three points on the serve with Taylor
Sander, David Lee and Matt Anderson, who was also top scorer
with 17 points, adding two of their own. Most impressive player
winner Micah Christenson added one to take the ace-total to 10.
Also, Italy began their FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup campaign
with a 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 22-25, 25-13) win over Canada in a
mixed performance from the side despite solid performances from
Ivan Zaytsev and Osmany Juantorena.
Zaytsev topped the score list with a 20-point haul while
Juantorena claimed the most impressive player award with 14
points, one less than Filippo Lanza. Canada’s Gavin Schmitt and
Nicholas Hoag both scored 15 points for their country.
The world No.4 took the opening two sets with relative ease, but
complacency slipped into their game in the third. However, they
recovered to take three vital points on the opening day of the
tournament. |
