USA wins Pool A with victory over Argentina
CAÑETE, Peru, June 21, 2017 – The United States claimed the
first position in Pool A after the conclusion of the preliminary
phase of the XVI Women’s Volleyball Pan American Cup by Movistar
on Sunday at Lolo Fernandez Coliseum of Lima.
The young team from United States defeated Argentina 3-0 (27-25,
25-14, 25-23) to earn the direct ticket to the semifinals with a
5-0 win-loss record and 23 points.
Andrea Drews and Madison Kingdom scored 16 and 11 points,
respectively, as the best scorers for the winners. Paula Yamila
Nizetih had 14 points in the losing effort.
Andrea Drews, top scorer of USA: “Argentina presented a
different formation to what we expected but these are situations
you have to learn how to control. They did a good job at
blocking and we tried to do our game. We established our offense
and hopefully we can keep improving and learning to control the
little details.”
Karch Kiraly, Coach of USA: “The team of Argentina did a good
job at blocking. I think we still have to improve things in
defense and offense but I know that match after match we will
continue growing.”
Yamila Nizetich, top scorer of Argentina: “Argentina came from
less to more but that also happened with the level of our
opponent. Today we could have the kind of game we wanted because
we have several players who are sick and had to rotate the
formation and couldn’t press with the serve and couldn’t react
to their fast tempo. For the upcoming matches we will be better
and we will show our real rhythm,”
Guillermo Orduna, Coach of Argentina: “Today we could not field
our regular team since several players have health problems but
hopefully they will recover for the next matches. In
quarterfinals we will play against Peru, a strong team playing
at home but we came prepared physically and mentally to face all
the rivals we have to.” |
