OKAYAMA, Japan, August 30, 2015 – World champions the United
States started their second round play at the 2015 FIVB Women’s
World Cup with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-13) rout of African
champions Kenya here Sunday afternoon.
The American women have won four matches in a row following an
upset full set loss to Serbia and improved their overall
win-loss record to 5-1. It’s also the first time since 2003 that
the United States record four successive wins at the World Cup.
Nicole Fawcett received the Most Impressive Player award after
scoring game-high 16 points for the United States with Megan
Easy adding 14. The American women outshot Kenya 45-24 and
outblocked them 9-2.
Kenya and Algeria, who are both from Africa, have failed to
collect a win in six tries in the 12-team round robin
tournament. Mercy Moim led Kenya with eight points.
Also in Okayama, Asian champions China beat Cuba in straight
sets (25-19, 25-10, 25-14) for their fifth win in six matches.
The Chinese women have claimed three wins in a row after losing
to the United States 3-0 on Monday. Zeng Chunlei and Zhang
Changning had 16 points each to lead China victory. Yang Junjing
(11), Liu Xiaotong (11) and Yan Ni (10) also scored in double
digits. Jennifer Alvarez top scored Cuba with 16 points.
In Sendai, Brankica Mihajlovic scored 16 points to power Serbia's 3-0
(25-18, 25-22, 25-22) win over the Dominican Republic.
Mihajlovic had an excellent all-around game with 12 spikes, two
blocks and two service aces. Jovana Stevanovic added 12 points
for Serbia, while Yonkaira Peña top scored for Dominican
Republic with 13 points. |
