USA wins, Dominicans outdueled by Japan

 

   

MATSUMOTO, Japan, August 27, 2015 – Reigning world champions the United States proved to be too strong for Algeria as they eased to a 3-0 (25-7, 25-2, 25-5) victory over the African runners-up in the first round of the FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Cup on Thursday afternoon.

 

The American women finished their first round play with a 4-1 win-loss record, suffering their only defeat 3-2 against Serbia. Tetori Dixon led the United States with 16 points and Easy Megan added 12.

 

The world champions outblocked Algeria 17-0 and outserved them 8-0 with the Most Impressive Player award going to Kelsey Robinson, who had six kills, three blocks and ace.

 

In Tokyo, the Dominican Republic suffered a painful 3-2 (25-18, 20-25, 30-32, 25-15, 15-13) loss to the hands of hosts Japan in front of a full house at Yoyogi National Stadium.

 

Dominican Prisilla Rivera led all the scorers with 26 points but her offensive exploits were not enough against the relentless Japanese side. Annerys Vargas and Gina Mambri finished with 15 and 14 points, respectively.

 

Sarina Koga topped Japan with 19 points, followed by Miyu Nakaoga, Haruyo Shimamura and Riho Otake with 15, 14 and 12 points, respectively, in the victory.

 

Also in Tokyo, Russia grabbed a straight-set (25-19, 25-13, 25-18) win over Cuba to sweep the first round.

 

Nataliya Obmochaeva scored 16 points to lead Russia to its fifth straight win in the tournament and top the Site A and overall rankings.

 

Alexandra Pasynkova added 10 more points for the Russian victory, while Cubans Alena Rojas Orta and Sulian Caridad Matienzo Linares finished with nine and eight points, respectively.
