United States and Puerto Rico Qualify for Round of 16 of the Women’s U21 World Championship

August 12, 2025.- United States and Puerto Rico qualified for the Round of 16 (Eighth Finals) of the Women’s U21 World Championship, not without first having the controversy of the Vietnam team for registering an ineligible player. Meanwhile, the Dominican Republic, Canada, and Mexico will play for positions 17/24.

United States 0 – China 3
The defending champions, China, took first place in Pool B by defeating the United States 3-0 (25-20, 25-12, 28-26) to close the group stage. In the first two sets, outside hitters  dominated, before the United States threatened in the third thanks to points from Henley Anderson. With the score at 26-26, China kept their composure with a spike from the left and closed the match thanks to an error in the U.S. reception. The United States finished in second place in Pool B.

Puerto Rico 1 – Vietnam 3
In Pool A, Vietnam defeated Puerto Rico 3-1 (25-17, 25-21, 23-25, 25-22), with Bui Thi Anh Thao scoring 18 points. Puerto Rico finished in fourth place in Pool A, but everything changed due to the following statement:

FIVB Statement on Ineligible Player in the FIVB 2025 Women’s U21 Volleyball World Championship
The case will be referred to the FIVB Disciplinary Panel for further assessment on possible sanctions extending beyond the event.

Following concerns raised that the Vietnam Volleyball Federation fielded an ineligible player in its U21 national team during the FIVB 2025 Women’s U21 Volleyball World Championship in Indonesia, the FIVB conducted an investigation in accordance with its regulations.

The investigation concluded that the player in question was not eligible under Article 12.2 of the FIVB 2023 Disciplinary Regulations. As a result, and in accordance with Articles 13.5.2 of the Event Regulations and 14.4 of the Disciplinary Regulations, the FIVB Disciplinary Panel Subcommittee determined that the matches of the Vietnam national team in which the player participated are forfeited, and the player is disqualified from the event with immediate effect.

In accordance with Article 14.4 of the Disciplinary Regulations, and considering the circumstances of the case, the Subcommittee will refer the file to the FIVB Disciplinary Panel for further assessment on possible sanctions extending beyond the event. At that stage, the Vietnam Volleyball Federation and the player will be invited to submit their written arguments. The FIVB will make no further comment on this matter while the process is ongoing.

Dominican Republic 0 – Croatia 3
The Dominican Republic lost in the last match of the group stage 0-3 (29-31, 21-25, 11-25) to Croatia. Despite starting the tournament with a victory, the Dominicans were unable to win any other matches and remain in fifth place in Pool B. They will play for positions 17/24.

Canada 1 – Serbia 3
Serbia achieved a 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-22, 19-25, 25-17) against Canada, driven by the 20 points of Bojana Ristanovic and the six blocks of Katarina Gagic. Canada finished in fifth place in Pool A.

Mexico 0 – Korea 3
In Pool B, Korea finished third after defeating Mexico 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-18). The Mexicans recorded their fifth defeat and finished in sixth place in Pool A, ready to compete for positions 17/24.
