United States keep alive dreams of a semifinal spot
Milan, Italy, October 9, 2014 – USA defeated defending champions
Russia for the second time at the FIVB Women's World
Championship. This time it was 3-1 (25-19, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23)
on the second day of the third round at Mediolanum Forum in
Milan.
The match's top scorers were Russia's Tatiana Kosheleva who won
25 points and USA's Kimberly Hill with 18.
Kelly Murphy (15), Foluke Akinradewo (13) and Christa
Harmotto-Dietzen (11) also reached double figures in the scores
for the winners.
With today’s results, World No. 1 Brazil and hosts Italy have
earned advancement into the semifinals without stepping on the
court on Thursday.
USA have maintained their hopes alive for a berth in Saturday's
semifinals. Russia still have a chance, though when they face
Italy on Friday. The defending champions can join Italy in
qualifying if they win for three points (3-0 or 3-1). Any other
result and it will be Italy and USA through to the medals round,
with Russia heading home. |
