Virgen and Ontiveros claim gold medal in Monterrey
MEXICO CITY, Mexico, November 4, 2014 – The powerful duo of Juan
Virgen and Lombardo Ontiveros won the men’s segment of the first
stop of the Mexican Beach Volleyball Tour at Monterrey.
Virgen and Ontiveros, the country’s best team, defeated the pair
of Ulises Ontiveros and Salvador Frias in an exciting match that
had the fans on the edge of their seats with a flurry of spikes,
blocks and spectacular defensive plays.
In the semifinal phase, Virgen and Ontiveros defeated Valdemar
Valdes and Alejandro Barajas in a close battle where the winners
showed why they are the best Mexican tandem. Frias and Ulises
Ontiveros beat Alexis Barraza and Francisco Tamayo in the other
semifinal that took place at the High Performance Center in
Monterrey.
Valdes and Barajas won over Barraza and Tamayo in the match for
the men’s bronze medal.
The women’s final featured the match that faced sisters Freda
and Frida Lopez against each other.
Frida Lopez, with experience in world championship, coupled with
Mildred Barros, who took part in one World Universiade, to beat
Freda Lopez and Fabiola Verde by scores of 21-13, 21-13 to claim
the title.
The women’s bronze medal match was a duel between teams of
siblings with Adriana and Gabriela Contreras defeating Angela
and Itzel Santoyo 21-17, 23-21. |
