FORTALEZA, Brazil, May 1, 2016 - Juan Virgen and Lombardo
Ontiveros won the bronze medal at the FIVB Beach Volleyball Open
celebrated in Fortaleza, Brazil.
The Mexican tandem defeated
Esteban and Marco Grimalt of Chile in two sets by scores of
23-21 and 21-17 to keep adding points in their ranking in order
to get the Olympic ticket to Rio 2016.
Virgen and Ontiveros claimed their second medal in one month in
events organized by the FIVB. The Mexian coupled registered 31
attacks against 26 by the South Americans in a statistically
very closed match in terms of unforced errors (9 on each side of
the net) and blocks (3 by Chile and 3 by Mexico).
Mexico had one ace that made a difference that could decide the
match on the team’s favor. Both couples played a very tough
first set when Chile even had an 11-10 advantage coming from
behind before the technical timeout.
The Grimalts fell short to convert the first set in their favor
with a 20-19 score, but failed their blocking game.
In the next rally, a crossed spike by Ontiveros put the odds on
Mexican side and despite missing a service that putt he score
21-21, Virgen repeated the dose with two agressive kills. |
