ZURICH, Switzerland, May 6, 2015 - Mirador Santo Domingo took
Volero Zurich by surprise in the first set but the hosts
convincingly came back to open their 2015 FIVB Volleyball
Women's Club World Championship campaign with a 3-1 (20-25,
25-17, 25-15, 25-15 victory).
And Rachel Sanchez coming in the
second set didn't hurt, either. The 26-year-old, Cuban-born
middle blocker helped turn the tide, adding 16 points to her
Olesia Rykhliuk's 20 as Volero pulled together to take a huge
step towards a semi-final berth - which would be their third in
as many appearances in the competition.
Gina Mambru and Candida Arias had 13 and 12 points,
respectively, for Mirador, while Marianne Fersola had 9 in the
loss.
Eventually it was consistency on the part of the hosts after the
first set that got them the well-earned victory.
Mirador Santo Domingo coach Marcos Kwiek: “We played a really
great first set against Volero Zurich, but started to struggle
afterwards though. We couldn’t keep our receiving game at a high
level, what resulted in fewer opportunities in our offensive
game.” |
