PUNTA CANA, Dominican Republic, June 28, 2015 – USA team of
Traci Weamer and Kendra Vanzwieten won the women’s gold medal of
the Punta Cana Beach Volleyball Tournament with a
come-from-behind victory (17-21, 21-16, 16-11) over Cuba’s
Yanileydis Sanchez and Lidianny Echevarria on Sunday.
“This is my very last tournament and it is good to go out with a
win,” Weamer said just before the award ceremony. “I loved
playing with Kendra as she is very easy to play with. I am also
proud of my team and about representing my country.”
It was the second gold medal for Weamer in the history of the
NORCECA Circuit as she won the Saint Lucia title in 2012 playing
with Kathryn Babcock. That same year she also won a silver medal
with Tealle Hunkus in Trinidad & Tobago.
Weamer and Vanzwieten had won a bronze medal in the first event
of 2015 in Cayman Islands and a silver medal in 2014 in Antigua
Guatemala.
Last year, Vanzwieten also won silver and bronze medals playing
alongside Allison Daley in Manzanillo, Mexico and North Bay,
Canada, respectively.
In the semifinals, Weamer and Vanzwieten won a terrific duel
against compatriots Emily Stockman and Allison McColloch 2-1
(15-21, 21-18, 19-17) while Sanchez and Echevarria edged
Canadians Claudia Seguin and Alexandra Poletto 2-1 (21-9, 15-21,
17-15).
Stockman and McColloch settled for the bronze medal winning the
third place contest in straight sets 2-0 (21-16, 21-11) over
Seguin and Poletto.
