Women of USA and Cuba on right path in Varadero

 

   

VARADERO, Cuba, August 28, 2015 – Teams of United States and Cuba took the right path in the pool play but Canada and Costa Rica are also battling for the medal round at the fourth stage of the NORCECA Beach Volleyball Circuit at the famous beach resort of Varadero.

Sara Hughes/Kelly Claes (USA-A) beat their opponent duos Amber Bennett/Valissia Brathwaite (ISV) 21-8, 21-2 and Jennifer Batista-Raquel Ferrand (DOM) 21-11, 21-11 to secure their spot at the quarterfinals.

In Pool B, their compatriots Irene Hester/Caitlin Ledoux (USA-B) also had a job as splendid as the sunny day following the downpour the night before as the American duo defeated Rachel Cockrell/Camille Saxton (CAN-1) 21-15, 21-15 and Ayana Dyette/ Malika Davidson (TRI) 21-10, 21-15.

The best job from the local teams came from Leila Martinez, also vice champion in Toronto, who partnered with Lidianni Echevarria to win in Pool C against Dala Noel/Skye Faucher-Mondesir (LCA) 21-6, 21-13,  Kerri Smit/Victoria Cowley (CAN-2) 24-22, 21-9 and  Ana Ríos/Bibiana Candelas (MEX-1) 21-9,18-21,15-11.

Lianma Flores, vice champion at the Pan American Games, won along with her young and occasional partner Yanileidis Sanchez, silver medalist in Punta Cana, as CUB-B won against the Trinidadians 21-19, 21-17, but lost to Rachel Cockrell/Camille Saxton (CAN-1) 21-16, 21-23, 15-11, and play against USA-B on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Costa Ricans Karen Cope/Natalia Alfaro defeated Gloria Santoyo/Stephanie Burnside (MEX-2) 21-12, 21-15 and Janice Valtes/Sigourney Kame (SUR) 21-7, 21-5, and look decided to win Pool D.
