Cuba grabs a comeback victory over Canada

 

   

HAVANA, Cuba, June 20, 2015 -  Cuba found its focus and drive on Saturday night to score a comeback 3-2 (17-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19, 15-12) victory over Canada in Pool C of the FIVB Men's Volleyball World League at the Ciudad Deportiva Coliseum in Havana.

 

Cuba’s Captain Rolando Cepeda unleashed his power with 25 points, including 19 kills, three blocks and three aces to lead the Cuban team to the win. Steven Marshall contributed 17 points for Canada, with Adam Simac adding 14.

 

In Istanbul, Turkey, Puerto Rico ended their Pool F campaign on a high thanks to a 3-1 (29-27, 25-16, 18-25, 25-19) win over Tunisia on Sunday. The result allows Puerto Rico to claim third spot in the table with Tunisia finishing last. 

Jean Carlos Ortiz was today's top scorer with 21 points, including 7 aces. 

 

In Thessaloniki, Greece, Slovakia came back from a one-set deficit to beat Mexico 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-19) and ensure third place in Pool G of the FIVB World League. 

 

In Tehran, Iran, with their home fans loudly cheering them on, Iran defeated the reigning FIVB Volleyball World League champions, Team USA, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-19) on Sunday. As soon as the match ended, fans from Iran happily erupted into song.

 

Shahram Mahmoudi led Iran with 17 points, while Americans Matthew Anderson and Aaron Russell both had nine points.


Home court advantage has meant a lot to these two teams at the FIVB World League 2015. USA won both matches in Los Angeles in May, while Iran also won in Tehran on Friday 3-0 (25-19, 29-27, 25-20).


USA still leads Pool B with 17 points, while Iran is in third place with 13 points. Iran handed USA their only two loses in Pool B.
