PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad & Tobago, December 21, 2015 - The
Trinidad and Tobago Volleyball Federation selected its top
athletes for 2015 with beach player Fabien Whitfield and Sinead
Jack selected getting the honors in men’s and women’s,
respectively.
The beach volleyball team of Whitfield and Daneil Williams was
selected Team of the Year while Marley Davidson and Nicolette
Demille won the awards as youth male and female athletes of the
year.
Daymian Stewart, President of the TTVF, said it was difficult to
name a sports man of the year after the performances of the Toco
Boy’s Fabien Whitfield and Daniel Williams in 2015.
Having to choose one from a two man team, was almost cruel but
the choice of Fabien Whitfield was made with the final decider
being the FIVB individual ranking which placed Fabien Whitfield
volleyball’s 2012 Sports Man Nominee as the 113th best beach
volleyball player on the planet with his partner Daniel Williams
the 2013 Sports Man Nominee at 117th.
Stewart said they are definitely Volleyball Team of the year
and if evaluated fairly should be the countries team of the
year. The Toco Boys finished the 2015 season ranked a phenomenal
third among the forty-one nations of North, Central American and
the Caribbean, finishing behind USA and Canada.
T&T played on all seven legs of the tour with two Bronze in USA
and St. Lucia respectively and placed fourth in Cuba. This year
was about podium performances for the humble duo from the east
coast.
Williams and Whitfield also won Gold in the California Open
earlier this year which added to a previous silver medal weeks
before on the USA based circuit. They later lost in the Quarter
Finals of the Pan American Games to the eventual Gold Medalist
arch-rivals Mexico. They also won the first round of the Olympic
Qualification process hosted in Trinidad.
Professional Volleyballer Sinead Jack was named Female
Volleyballer of the year, more so for her success with her club
in Russia, Sinead and her club made it all the way to the finals
of the European Champions League with the 23 year old, 6”7’
southerner playing a major role, Sinead also journeyed to Mexico
to represent T&T at the Continental Championship as the TTVF
started the rebuilding process for our senior team.
The National Youth and Junior Captain Nicollette Demille was
named Female Youth Athlete of the year along with the thirteen
year old sensational Libero Marley Davidson as the Male Youth
Athlete of the year. |
