“Queens of the Caribbean” arrive into the Sport Village
LIMA, Peru, August 5, 2019 – The Dominican Republic’s women
volleyball team arrived into the Pan American Sport Village on
Monday, two days after stretching Brazil to five sets in a
decisive match of the qualification first process to the Olympic
Games.
The Reinas del Caribe, led by standout attackers Brayelin
Martinez and Bethania de la Cruz and defensive superstar Brenda
Castillo, are one of the teams considered pre-tournament
favorites to battle for the gold medal here.
The Dominicans are seeded first in Pool A alongside host Peru,
Colombia and Canada. The four teams in Pool B are defending
champions United States, Brazil, Puerto Rico and Argentina.
They won a bronze medal in Toronto for only its second medal in
the history of the games. They won a gold medal when the games
took place in Santo Domingo.
All the teams will go through the preliminary inspections of the
nationality of the players and other requirements before the
start of the competition at Miguel Grau Coliseum in the section
of Callao in Lima.
The top two ranked teams after the first will meet in crossed
semifinals next Saturday with the medal matches scheduled on
Sunday. |
