Dominicans sweep Caribbean Series
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, January 6, 2019 – The Dominican Republic
swept Puerto Rico as winner of the three matches of the Women’s
Volleyball Caribbean Series disputed at Roberto Clemente
Coliseum of Hato Rey from January 4 to 6.
After winning 3-1 and 3-0 the first two matches of the inaugural
competition, the Dominicans came back on Sunday looking for the
sweep and they did it winning by scores of 3-0 (25-21, 25-18,
28-26).
Prisilla Rivera was the top scorer for the Dominican side with
13 points, followed by Bethania de la Cruz and Brayelin Martínez
each with 12 points. Candida Arias chipped in with 8 points
while Annerys Vargas added 6 in the victory.
Paulina Prieto had a match-high 15 points for Puerto Rico while
Pilar Victoriá added 12 in the losing effort.
The match was pretty evened as the Dominicans led by slight
margin the scoring categories 46-42 in attacks, 6-5 in blocks
and 5-2 in aces.
They also made fewer errors 16-21.

Bethania y Brayelin guian triunfo Dominicana sobre Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Bethania de la Cruz scored 23 points and
Brayelin Martinez added 18 as the Dominican Republic team beat
Puerto Rico 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-19) in the continuation of the
Caribbean Volleyball Women's Series on Saturday night at the
Roberto Clemente Coliseum of Hato Rey.
It was the second victory in as many outings for the Dominican
team in the inaugural event. They had won on Friday 3-1 (19-25,
25-19, 25-14, 25-16) with 24 points from the star player
Bethania, captain of the team.
De la Cruz had 3 blocks and two service aces and Martinez
finished with three blocks and a direct service.
Pilar Victoriá and Karina Ocasio were the best scorers for
Puerto Rico with 12 and 10 points, respectively.
The winners had a 42-30 advantage in attacks, while the hosts
were superior in blocks 12-10 and service aces 5-3.
The Caribbean Series concludes tomorrow Sunday with the third
match of the competition starting at 8 o'clock at night. The
event is being broadcast by WAPA TV and in the Dominican
Republic through the Colimdo TV internet channel of the
Dominican Olympic Committee.

Bethania scores 24 in Dominican win over Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, January 4, 2019 - Bethania De la Cruz
scored 24 points in the Dominican Republic victory over Puerto
Rico in four sets to start the Caribbean Women's Volleyball
Series at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum on Friday. The scores were 19-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-16. Puerto Rico dominated the first set, but could not maintain its
pace in the following episodes. De la Cruz was supported on the offensive by Brayelin Martínez
with 12 and Prisilla Rivera 10. For Puerto Rico, Pilar Victoriá
scored 11, Sarai Alvarez had 0 and Karina Ocasio, Paulina Prieto
and Neira Ortiz each finished with 8. "I'm happy with the result, I have players who were not on the
international court since October and they fit the game very
well. I hope the level goes up for tomorrow,"said Marcos Kwiek,
leader of the Dominican Republic. For his part, José Mieles explained that after playing well the
first set the group could not complete the offensive, "They
established their game and we could not maintain the offensive
and defensive rhythm".

Dominicans win friendly match against Toa Baja
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, January 4, 2019 – The Dominican Republic
National Team defeated the Llaneras of Toa Baja in a exhibition
match ahead of the Women’s Volleyball Caribbean Series starting
on Friday at Roberto Clemente Coliseum. The Dominicans won by scores of 25-20, 25-21, 22-25, 25-22
behind the offensive output of Gaila Gonzalez, Prisilla Rivera
and Bethania de la Cruz who had 12, 10 and 9 points,
respectively. Genesis Collazo had a match-high 17 points for Toa Baja while
Kanisha Jimenez and Dulce Tellez finished with 13 and 8 points,
respectively. The first edition of the Caribbean Series will be played between
Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and it is planned to be
contested on the early days of January of each year. The idea is
to expand it to four teams in the future, said Cristobal Marte,
president of NORCECA. Before the exhibition match, the Consul of the Dominican
Republic in Puerto Rico, Franklin Grullon welcomed the “Reinas
del Caribe” and presented the team with a Dominican flag.

Puerto Rico announces his team for Qualifier and Caribbean
Series
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, January 3, 2019 – Puerto Rican national
coach Jose Mieles announced the 14 players of the team that will
play in both the Qualification Tournament to the Pan American
Games and the Caribbean Series. “I will repeat 12 of the players in both matches and will rotate
one setter and one libero between the tournament and the
series,” explained Mieles. The 12 players competing in both events are the captain Natalia
Valentin, Shara Venegas, Neira Ortiz, Diana Reyes, Ana Sofía
Jusino, Paola Rojas, Karina Ocasio, Legna Hernández, Julymar
Otero, Pilar Marie Victoriá, Paulina Prieto and Sarai Álvarez.
Mieles said that for the qualifier he will be using the prospect
setter Wilmarie Rivera and the libero Valeria Leon while for the
Caribbean Series will use Raymariely Santos (setter) and Adriana
Viña (líbero).
Puerto Rico opens its participation in the qualifier on Friday
January 4 facing Nicaragua, then meets Nicaragua on Saturday 5
and on Sunday 6 will play against Trinidad & Tobago.

Dominicans announce training group for Caribbean Series
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, December 10, 2018 – The Female National
Volleyball Program of the Dominican Republic announced the group
of players called to a training camp to select the 14 players
that will see action in the first edition of the Caribbean
Series to take place from January 4 to 6.
Cristobal Marte Hoffiz, president of the national program,
confirmed that the selection of his country will include a great
part of the team that participated in the FIVB World
Championship last October.“We have summoned a training team with almost all the players
active in the foreign leagues and will take 14 players mostly
the ones that were active during the world championship,” Marte
Hoffiz said.
The Dominican training group is led by the Captain Bethania De
la Cruz and includes the veterans Annerys Vargas, Prisilla
Rivera, Candida Arias, Niverka Marte, Lisvel Eve, Camil
Dominguez, Gina Mambru, Brayelin Martínez, Gaila Gonzalez and
Marifranchi Rodriguez.
