sixth women’s team qualified to the volleyball tournament of the
2012 London Olympic Games by defeating Cuba in four thrilling

Puerto Rico takes bronze in a thrilling match
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 5, 2012 – World-ranked No. 19 Puerto Rico
pulled out a 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 25-14, 23-25, 15-11) victory
over No. 22 Canada in the bronze medal match of the NORCECA
Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on Saturday.
Sarai Alvarez and Aury Cruz were the main offensive contributors
to the victory with 29 and 24 points respectively while Jetzabel
Del Valle chipped in 14.

Mexico claims fifth position
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 5, 2012 – Hosts Mexico handed Costa Rica a
3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-22) defeat in the match for fifth place of
the NORCECA Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on
Saturday.
Alejandra Isiordia and Karla Sainz were Mexico’s top scorers
with 16 and 10 points respectively and Claudia Rios added 7.
Costa Rica’s Verania Willis had a match-high 21 points and Karen
Cope charted 8.
Both teams served 6 aces but Mexico was better in the blocking
category 8-4. Costa Rica made 27 errors to 18 by the winners.

Seventh place goes to Trinidad and Tobago
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 5, 2012 – Trinidad and Tobago defeated
Honduras in straight sets (25-10, 25-15, 25-23) in the match of
seventh place of the NORCECA Women’s Olympic Qualification
tournament on Saturday.
Abigail Gloud and Krystle Esdelle had 15 and 10 points
respectively for the winners while Renele Forde and Delana
Mitchell charted 8 apiece. Honduras’ Catarine Leiva collected

Mexico and Costa Rica to play for fifth place
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 5, 2012 – Mexico saw off Trinidad and
Tobago in straight sets (25-13, 25-16, 26-24) and now will play
Costa Rica for the fifth place of the NORCECA Women’s Olympic
Qualification Tournament.
Alejandra Isiordia was the best scorer of Mexico with 19 points,
including four service winners and one block, while teammate
Olivia Meza added 8 points. Kystle Esdelle led Trinidad and
Tobago with 18 points and Abigail Gloud followed with eight.
Mexico edged Trinidad and Tobago.

Dominican Republic trounces Canada, advance to final match

Republic advanced to the final-match of the NORCECA Women’s

Cuba to the title-match for London ticket

overcame Puerto Rico in four sets (23-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-22)

Costa Rica to play for fifth place
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 5, 2012 – Costa Rica advanced to a match
for the fifth position in the NORCECA Women’s Olympic
Qualification Tournament by dispatching Honduras in straight
sets (25-11, 25-9, 25-11) in just 55 minutes on Friday.
Catalina Fernandez and Verania Willis topped Costa Rica’s
scoring stats with 9 and 8 points respectively while Karen Cope,
Angela Willis and Paola Ramirez each contributed 7 points to the
victory. Honduras’ Catarine Leiva finished with five tallies.
Verania Willis recorded five aces leading Costa Rica to a 13-1.

president of the continental confederation and first executive

Canada makes into the Final Four phase
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 2, 2012 – Canada downed Mexico in straight
sets (25-17, 25-18, 25-18) to reach the semifinal phase of the
NORCECA Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament where they will
meet world No. 9 Dominican Republic next Friday.
It was a well fought match but the taller Canadians capitalized
on their size to out-block their opponents 8-3. Both teams
served two aces and made the same total of errors with 18.
The Mexicans battled point by point with good defense but
couldn’t find ways to stop Canada’s prolific point-producer
Sarah Pavan.
The lefty Pavan led all the scorers in the match with 21 points.

Puerto Rico to meet Cuba in semifinals
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 2, 2012 – Puerto Rico advanced to a
semifinal match against Cuba in the NORCECA Women’s Olympic
Qualification Tournament after outclassing Costa Rica in
straight sets (25-12. 25-12, 25-9) on Wednesday at Tijuana
Multi-Sports Gymnasium.
Puerto Rico’s Coach David Aleman used all his players with the
exception of middle blocker Jetzabel Del Valle en route to the
easy victory in exactly one hour.
The gap between the two teams was especially wide in the aces
department with the winners scoring 13 aces against only 3 by
the losers. Puerto Rico also out- blocked the opponents 8-4.

Cuba wins Pool B and move to semifinals
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 1, 2012 – Cuba beat Mexico 3-0 (25-17,
25-14, 25-9) to win Pool B of the NORCECA Women’s Olympic
Qualification Tournament while earning a direct ticket to the
semifinals of the event. Mexico finished in second place and
will play against Canada in the quarterfinals. Cuba had a huge
13-1 advantage in the serving aces department and also bested
the opponents 8-5.

Costa Rica joins quarterfinals in Tijuana
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 1, 2012 – Costa Rica saw off Trinidad and
Tobago 3-1 (25-19, 25-22, 15-25, 25-13) to claim a quarterfinal
spot in the NORCECA Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on
Tuesday.
Verania Willis recorded 22 points to lead the offense of the
Central American side. She was aided by Angela Willis and Karen
Cope who charted 15 and 13 respectively. Krystle Esdelle and
Rheeza Grant finished with 14 and 13 for the defeated team.
The taller Trinidadians could not capitalize on their 18-11
advantage in the blocking stats.

Canada advance to the quarterfinals in Tijuana
TIJUANA, Mexico, May 1, 2012 – Canada secured third place in
Pool A of the NORCECA Women’s Pan American Cup following a 3-0
(25-9, 25-10, 25-8) victory against winless Honduras at Tijuana
Multi Sports Gymnasium on Tuesday.
The North American side composed mostly by bench players
outscored their young Central American opponents both in serving
aces 13-1 and in blockings 11-2.

Cuba recovers from shaky start against Costa Rica
TIJUANA, Mexico, April 30, 2012 – Cuba overcame a slow start to
defeat Costa Rica in straight-sets (25-22, 25-15, 25-6) for its
second victory in Pool B of the NORCECA Women’s Olympic
Qualification Tournament on Monday.Cuba had a 13-6 advantage in the aces category and in the
blocking department blanked the opposition 6-0. The match lasted
just 61 minutes. Veteran Yanelis Santos had 11 aces among her 17 points for Cuba

Mexico outduels Costa Rica in opening day
TIJUANA, Mexico, April 29, 2012 – Mexico defeated Costa Rica 3-0
(25-21, 25-23, 25-14) in the last match of Day One at the
NORCECA Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament on Sunday.
It was a close battle for the first two sets of the contest but
the home team took advantage of a long rally of serves by setter
Alicia Castro to take a commanding 13-0 lead in the third set.
Mexico team was better in serving aces (7-2) and the Costa
Ricans were the superior side in the blocking (8-4).
Alejandra Isiordia topped Mexico with 17 points.

team-effort to score a convincing 3-0 (25-18, 25-14, 25-21) over
