ST JOHN’S, Antigua, May 2, 2010 – St.
Vincent out pointed French St. Martin in
five sets (22-25, 25-9, 30-28, 22-25, 16-14)
in the first semifinal match of Sunday at
the ECVA U-20 Men’s Championship.
“A- boom, vincy, vincy” and “Phoenix to your
feet” were the chants of the two opposing
teams French St. Vincent and St. Martin as
they tangled in match number nine.
Both teams realized the value of the match
as the winner would play for the
championship while the loser would play for
third place.

Rica defeats Guatemala for fifth place

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 2, 2010 – Costa
Rica defeated Guatemala and won the duel between
Central American rivals and the fifth place at
NORCECA Girls’ Youth Volleyball Championship.
The scores were 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 and the
winners played with better coordination and
effectiveness.
Gabriela Arias and Tracy Fernandez led Costa
Rica with 16 and 12 points respectively. The
best for the home team were Evelin Sanchez and
Ada Villalobos with 6 points apiece.

Defending champions USA will be looking for
a fifth consecutive title in NORCECA Girls’
Youth Championship when they play against
Mexico on Sunday for the continental gold
medal and the competition’s single ticket at
stake to the Youth Olympic Games in
Singapore.
The Americans, who have won five of the six
previous editions of the event for players
under 18 years-old, made it into the finals
by defeating Puerto Rico in straight sets

The win secures the Mexicans of a berth in the
2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World Championship in
Turkey while they are still in contention for
the one ticket at stake to the inaugural Youth
Olympic Games in Singapore next August.

the tricks out the bag as they searched for

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala, May 1, 2010 – El
Salvador defeated Jamaica 3-0 (25-13, 25-9,
25-10) in the match for ninth place of the
NORCECA Girls’ Youth Continental Championship.
The action lasted 57 minutes.
The Salvadorans, smaller than their opponents
but with better execution, totaled 10 service
winners against only 3 from the Jamaica side.
Andrea Manzur, captain of the winning side, was

on Friday. In the semi final phase, they

The taller Dominicans dominated in blocks
(12-0) and in serving aces (7-2). Elizabeth
Martinez was the best of the winning side

2010 - The NORCECA Confederation was profoundly
saddened after learning the death of Mr. Juan
Antonio Samaranch, the IOC Honorary Life
President, who passed away today in Barcelona of
heart troubles.
The Spaniard Samaranch, 89, was considered a
giant of the Olympic movement as a leader of the
organization for 21 years, the longest tenure
after that of the institution's founding Baron
Pierre de Coubertin.
“Mr. Samaranch was one of the most influential
leaders in the history of the Olympic movement
and, despite his failing health, he was still
active promoting the sports until the last days
of his life,” said Cristobal Marte Hoffiz,
President of NORCECA.
“He was respected as a father figure around the
international sport scene and he will be missed
by everyone with ties with sports and that

2010 – The NORCECA Continental Girls’ Youth
Championship for athletes under 18 years-old is
scheduled from April 27-May 2 in Guatemala with
teams from ten countries vying for one ticket to
the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games and three
spots in next year’s FIVB World Championship in
Turkey.
The United States team has typically dominated
the competition which began in 1998, winning
five of six editions including the last four in
a row. They also finished as runner-ups to
Puerto Rico in 2000.

2010 – The President of Dominican Republic
Olympic Committee had encouraging words for

the increase of volleyball popularity around
the world and its current placement in the

Luis Mejia Oviedo took part in the official
opening ceremony of the two FIVB bodies and
had the chance to address the audience.
“Volleyball and Beach Volleyball were two of
the most followed disciplines during the
last two editions of the Olympics in Athens
and Beijing,” said Mejia Oviedo. “Today I
can say that volleyball has a place among
the top three sports in the Olympics.”
“It has been a long way since the sport
first was accepted as an Olympic sport in
1964 but you are the people responsible of

Cuban Wilfredo Leon Most Awarded |

Wilfredo Leon was the Most Valuable Player
and the most awarded athlete in the NORCECA

United States.
The “Lion King”, as Leon is affectionately

The Americans rotated all their players and
John LaRusch topped the scoring for USA with

Doug Beal leads USA team of instructors in CAVB

CAIRO, Egypt,
April 6, 2010 – Legendary coach Doug Beal,
member of NORCECA Board of Administration
and currently CEO of USA Volleyball, was
part of a team of instructors from United
States lecturing in a High Performance
Coaches Seminar organized by the
Confederation of African Volleyball (CAVB).
More than 100 participants from 27 African
countries, including 10 women, and from 10
European and Asian countries took part in
the four-day seminar in Cairo, Egypt. The
team was completed by renowned technicians
Carl McGowan, Bill Neville, John Kessel and
Robert Browning.

Youth Tournament in Guadalajara

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 6, 2010 – The coaches
of the nine teams participating in NORCECA Boys’
Youth Continental Tournament that kicks off on
Tuesday, praised the level of organization and
expressed optimism regarding the projected
performance of their respective sides.
The winners of the event will qualify to this
year’s Youth Olympic Games in Singapore.
Besides, the first two teams are getting tickets
to the 2011 FIVB Boys’ Youth World Championship.

Nine NORCECA Boys
teams vying for ticket to Singapore |

GUADALAJARA, Mexico, April 5, 2010 – Nine
teams will take part in the seventh edition
of NORCECA Boys’ Youth Continental
Tournament starts on Tuesday in Guadalajara,
the Capital of the State of Jalisco in
Mexico.
The sides will compete for a ticket to this
year’s inaugural Youth Olympic Games in
Singapore and two spots in the 2011 FIVB
Boys’ Youth World Championship.
Grouped in Pool A are defending champions
USA, Cuba and Canada. Puerto Rico, Dominican
Republic and Curacao will compete in Pool B
while hosts Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica
will play in Pool C.
The two best ranked pool winners, based on
points-ratio, will advance to the semi final
round, and the third one will join the three
teams placed in second position for the
quarterfinals eliminatory.

Mexicans Bibi Candelas and Mayra Garcia scored
an astonishing victory over SWATCH FIVB 2009
World Champions Jennifer Kessy and April Ross of

The 26th world-ranked Candelas-Garcia
prevailed against the favourite team of Kessy-Ross

2010 – Peru prevailed against Dominican
Republic winning a five-setter in the gold
medal match of the First Women’s International
Tournament held at Miguel Grau del Callao
Gymnasium of Lima.
Daniela Uribe scored with one ace for the
final point of the match that finished

Clarivett Yllescas and Karla Ortiz were the

Corozal claimed their second consecutive
title and ninth overall in the Puerto Rican
Men’s Superior League by defeating Guaynabo
in a five-setter by score of 21-25, 26-24,
20-25, 25-23, 15-9 played in front of more
than 5,000 spectators at Mario Morales
Gymnasium.
Losers of the first two matches of the
best-of-seven final series, the eventual
champions went on to win the next four.
Three of the six matches were extended to

Association (JaVA), says he is looking forward to working
with Arlene Morgan and Tamika Pennicott, who were both
elected to the posts of general secretary and treasurer,
respectively, of the association's executive at a special
general meeting last Saturday.
The elections, which took place at the Jamaica Defence Force
Conference Room, saw Morgan, who is from UWI Volleyball
Club, getting the better of MOSA's Hyper Nelson and Vikings
Volleyball Club's Mark Lewis; while Pennicott was the only
nominee for her post.

USA Boys' Team with Olympic dream |

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado, December 19, 2009 - U.S. boys’
volleyball players will get the chance to call themselves
Olympians in 2010 at the first Youth Olympics, which will be
held Aug. 14-26 in Singapore.
The first ever Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010 will bring
together approximately 3,600 athletes, ages 14-18, and 1,450
officials. The Youth Games will feature all 26 sports on the
program of the 2012 Olympic Games, with a smaller number of
disciplines and events.
USA Volleyball's 2010 Boys' Youth National Team (with a
modified age group) is scheduled to participate, contingent
upon successful qualification through the NORCECA
Continental Championship. Because the Youth Olympic Games
are being held in the same year as the zonal qualification
tournament for world championships.

Mexican Team from Baja California win at USA |

|
ANAHEIM, California.- Baja California's Boys Team won the
Youth Category in the last edition of the 2009 Holiday
Classic, held in Anaheim.
The tournament gathered more than 190 teams from Arizona,
Hawaii, Nevada and Southern California, competing in many
categories and the Mexican team was one of three who
participated on the Classic, all of them from the Baja
California region.
The team coached by Oscar Licea, defeated HBC 14 from
Huntington Beach, California 3-0.

Sites of NORCECA’s main events confirmed for 2010 |

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic, December 15, 2009 – The
Pan American Cups in both genders, the top annual events of
the NORCECA Confederation will take place in Puerto Rico and
Mexico next year.
The sites of the competitions were decided during the Sport
Organizing Commission during its two-day meetings held in
Santo Domingo last week.
The V Men’s Pan American Cup will be played in Puerto Rico
in Mayaguez or Bayamon on May 20-31, while the IX Women’s
Pan American Cup.

Confederation inducted the late Alejandro Salinas de la
Garza, former President of the Mexican Volleyball

last Friday.

Federation has submitted a formal bid to
host the 2011 FIVB Girls’ Youth World
Championship in the cities of Mexicali and
Tijuana, Baja California.
The official request signed by Mr. Ismael
Acosta, President of the Mexican Federation,
has the full support of the Governor of the
State of Baja California, Mr. Guadalupe
Osuna Millán, and the State Director of the
Sport Institute, Mr. Saul Castro Verdugo.

approved a proposal to introduce a new FIVB
development funding project where national

Development Fund proposal, which will now be

Awarded as the top blocker (1.00 per set)
and best server (16 aces) of the competition
besides being best scorer of his team with
74 points (14.8), Simon also received the

Roberlandy Simon led Cuba to an overwhelming
victory over Japan by score of 25-19, 25-20,
25-22 to keep alive its chances of winning
the 2009 FIVB Men’s Grand Champions Cup.
Cuba improved to 3-1, the same record of
Japan while Brazil shows a 4-0 record. On
Monday Cuba plays Iran while Brazil meets
Japan. In case of a tie, the positions will
be determined by points-ratio.
Simon compiled 16 points including five
blocks and four aces and Michael Sanchez

teen-ager Wilfredo Leon? Who is that other

16-years-old marvel?

Cuban dressing room, almost all the eyes
turn toward a wiry statuesque young man they
simply call “The Russian”.
His name is Michael Sanchez Bozlueva, born
in Kiev, Ukraine of a Cuban father and a

Today is a sad day in the lives of all
volleyballers, not only in Trinidad and
Tobago but in the Caribbean. The Trinidad
and Tobago volleyball fraternity joins the
family of Mark Anthony Daly in mourning his
passing. He died today in a vehicular
accident on the Solomon Hochoy Highway.
Mark began his volleyball career at an early
age at school then on to club level with UTC
Rockets which was based in Skinner Park.
Moving up in skill and wanting to broaden
his playing horizons, Mark left Rockets and
joined Glamorgan Volleyball Club and from
there his playing career rocketed taking him
on the National team.

November 19, 2009 - NORCECA champions Cuba
collected their first victory of the FIVB
Men’s World Grand Champions Cup by coming
from behind to defeat Poland 3-1 (22-25,
25-18, 25-18, 25-22) on Thursday.
The Cubans, who had the advantage 16-9 in
blocks and 12-7 in aces, improved their
win-loss record to 1-1 after the previous
day’s defeat to Brazil in five sets. Poland
dropped to 0-2.

Dominican Republic claimed a four-set
victory against host Japan by score of

convincing straight-sets victory over Dominican
Republic in the third day of action at the FIVB

The victory earned Italy a share of first place

FIVB are deeply saddened after the death of
Cuban Antonio Perdomo, who passed away on
Monday in Havana after suffering a heart
attack. He was 66.
Perdomo, known as “Ñico” around the world
volleyball family, was one of the most
renowned Cuban coaches alongside with the
legendary Eugenio George. At the moment of
his death he was preparing to travel to
Guatemala to conduct a course as FIVB
International Instructor.

the Guatemala Volleyball Federation.

Cuba wins Norceca’s gold and ticket to Japan |

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico, October 17, 2009 –
Cuba defeated United States 25-21, 22-25,
25-21, 25-22 claiming the gold medal of the
NORCECA Men’s Continental Championship and
the last remaining ticket to the FIVB World
Grand Champions Cup.
It is the 14 top finish for the Cubans in
the 21-year history of the regional
competition. They now join host Japan,
Brazil, Poland, Iran and Egypt in the men’s
world event to be held in Osaka and Nagoya,
Japan from November 18-23.
Hosts Puerto Rico won the bronze medal in a
five-set battle with Canada that finished
25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 22-25, 15-9.

Escalante topped five Puerto Ricans scoring
in double figures with a match-high 21
points including four aces and two blocks.
Luis Rodriguez and Victor Rivera each

Jose Rivera charted 18 and 11 points

Mexico erased a 1-2 deficit and edged
Dominican Republic in the match for the
fifth position at NORCECA Men’s Continental
Championship. The score was 25-19, 18-25,
21-25, 25-20, 15-13.
The Mexicans, who also prevailed in five
sets against Dominican Republic in
Guadalajara last August in a match for the
ticket to the FIVB World Championship, were
topped by the 31 points of Leonardo Manzo.
Richard Lazcano and Edgar Herrera added 16
and 15 respectively.
Jose Caceres, the leading scorer of the
competition, had a match-high 37 points for
the Dominican Republic. Victor Batista and
Johan Lopez added 14 and 10 respectively.

Elwyn Oxley led Barbados with 21 points
including four blocks and Fabian Cox added
18 all via attacks. Damien Danzell
contributed 13 points to the winning effort
including seven blocks and two aces. Domingo
Avila and Donaldo Ureña recorded 14 points
apiece for Panama and Ricardo Brown tallied
11.
“It is good to go back home with this
victory,” said Ludger Niles, the coach of

Prisilla Rivera of CAV Murcia 2005 was
elected as the Most Valuable Player of the
Spaniard Women’s Super Cup that concluded on
Sunday at Principe de Asturias Pavillion.
Rivera scored 29 points in the decisive
victory over Menorca Volei in five dramatic
sets by score of 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 23-25,
15-10.
This is the fourth MVP trophy earned by the
heavy-hitting Dominican who previously took
the same honors at the Spaniard League
Finals, the Queens Cup and the Norceca
Continental Championship.
“I did my job the best I could,” said Rivera
after the victory. “I lowered my rhythm for
moments because I was very tired but this is

over team Mexico 2, integrated by Diana Estrada

The action of the III NORCECA Beach
Volleyball Circuit started on Thursday at
the stadium located in Puerto Vallarta’s
Unidad Agustin Flores Contreras Sports
Complex.
Today’s activities consisted of an
elimination round to allow more Mexican
teams to compete in the event and the duos
from Colima, Veracruz, Sonora, and Jalisco
were able to get a nod for the competition.
In the women’s category, six duos competed
and the ones to get a pass to the Circuit
were Vanessa Virgen and Polett Cruz from

Dominican Republic saved four match-points
in the fourth set and went on to defeat

NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship
played in front of more than 7,000
enthusiastic spectators.
The victory earned the Dominicans the ticket

Dominican Prisilla Rivera was elected the Most
Valuable Player of the NORCECA Women’s
Continental Championship won by her side in an
emotional final match against Puerto Rico.
Brenda Castillo, also from Dominican Republic,
was the most heralded player in the closing
ceremony taking the trophies as best digger,
best receiver and best libero.
Cubans Yanelis Santos and Nancy Carrillo were
selected as best server and blocker respectively
and their young teammate Wilma Salas received
the award as “rising star”.
American Nancy Metcalf resulted in the best
spiker and Puerto Ricans Aurea Cruz and Vilmarie
Mojica were recipients of the recognition as
best scorer and setter.

For second time in the NORCECA Women’s
Continental Championship, Cuba erased a 0-2
deficit to defeat United States and take
home the bronze medal. The match finished
17-25, 16-25, 28-26, 25-16, 15-11.
Wilma Salas led Cuba with 15 points and
Nancy Carrillo followed with 14 including
five blocks. Yanelis Santos and Yusidey
Silie added 13 and 10 points respectively,
and Rachel Sanchez came from the bench to
record 9 points including three blocks.

Canada scored a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 victory over
Mexico and finished in the fifth position of the
NORCECA Women’s Continental Championship.
Tiffany Dodds (13), Brittney Page (11) and
Marisa Field (10) all scored in double figures
for the winning side. Mexican Cecilia Rios
topped all the players with 17 points and Grecia
Rivera added 12.
“I am happy with the fifth place,” said Arnd
Ludwig, the coach of Canada. “We are ahead of
teams like Mexico and Costa Rica and separated
behind the top four of NORCECA. Our goal in the
near future is to get closer to those teams.”

result ever in the regional competition

13, 2009 – The Coaches Course Level I
organized by the FIVB Regional Development
Center in Dominican Republic was completed
last Saturday with the presentation of the
certificates of approval during the closing
ceremony presided over by Professor Carlos
Diaz Bancalari of Argentina.
Twenty five coaches took part of the course
which included 28 hours of practical
instructions and 30 of theoretical classes
for a total of 58 hours. Cuban Justo Morales
assisted Diaz Bancalari during the week-long
course.

Cup of Women’s Volleyball in dramatic
fashion by prevailing in a five-set battle
against USA by score of 25-12, 18-25, 25-22,
19-25, 15-13.
Welissa “Sassá” Gonzalez led Brazil with 16
points and Regiane Bidias added 14. American
Nancy Metcalf led all the scorers with 18
points and Cynthia Barboza tallied 15 points.
Brazil dominated the first set without
difficulties and it appeared like it was
going to be an easy task.

Grand Prix.
The Dominicans lost to Poland here 22-25,

was downed by Thailand 19-25, 25-20, 25-21,
23-25, 15-11 in the action in Bangkok.
Puerto Rico, the other Norceca team taking

Canada scores second victory in Norceca-H |

HAVANA, Cuba, August 15, 2009 – Canada did a
quick job against Suriname claiming its
second victory in the Norceca-H third round
tournament of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World
Championship. The score was 25-13, 25-17,
25-13.
Three Canadians scored in double digits led
by Dallas Soonias with 12 points.
Louis-Pierre Mainville and Alexandre Gaumont
added 11 and 10 respectively. Suriname’s
Robert Naarden topped all the scorers with
14 points.
Canada had margins of 9-1 and 7-1 in blocks
and service categories while converting 37
of 72 spikes’ attempts. “It has been very
good winning these two matches before facing
Cuba tomorrow,” said Davidiux Brock, the
Captain of Canada.

USA beat Puerto Rico, Dominicans lost to
Netherlands |
|
|
BANGKOK, Thailand, August 14, 2009 – USA
showed no mercy to Puerto Rico beating its
Norceca rival in straight sets 25-16, 25-18,
25-22 on Saturday in their second match of
the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix. The
Americans had defeated the Puerto Ricans 3-2
during the first week in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil.
Nancy Metcalf led USA with 12 points and
Jordan Larson and Foluke Akinradewo each
notched 11 tallies. Puerto Rican Aurea Cruz
led her side with 10 points.
Meanwhile in Hong Kong, Netherlands defeated
Dominican Republic in straight sets but not
without a battle to keep its unbeaten record
in the FIVB World Grand Prix. They prevailed
by score of 25-14, 33-31, 30-28 on Saturday
afternoon.

Coaches appreciate playing in Norceca-F Men’s
Tournament |

|
IRVINE, California, August 14, 2009 - Head
coaches of the four teams participating in
the 2010 World Championships Qualifier for
NORCECA Group F all expressed their
appreciation for getting to play in the
tournament during a press conference on
Friday.
The competition will begin on Saturday, Aug.
15 at the Bren Center on the campus of UC
Irvine in Southern California. “It is a
blessing to be here. We have worked really
hard to get here and we hope to have a good
experience,” said Jorge E. Chavez Garoz.

Cuba downs Suriname in straight sets |

HAVANA, Cuba,
August 14, 2009 – Hosts Cuba trounced Suriname
25-13, 25-10, 25-12 in the second match of the
opening day in the Norceca-H third round
tournament of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World
Championship.
The Cuban
team proved to be too strong for Suriname in
every phase of the lopsided match. The home side
outscored the visitors 9-0 and 6-0 in blocks and
service aces.
Henry Bell led Cuba with 12 points, including
two blocks, and Joandry Leal had one block and
three aces .

|
|
HAVANA, Cuba, August 14, 2009 – Canada beat
Bahamas in straight sets in the first match
of the Norceca-H third round tournament of
the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship. The
score was 25-14, 25-15, 25-20.
Mark Dodds and Adam Simac topped Canada with
8 points apiece. Fred Winters added seven
and Gavin Schmidt and Dallas Soonias each
contributed 6 points.
Byron Ferguson was Bahamas’ best scorer with
8 tallies and Princtanique Wilson and
Renaldo Knowles notched 7 apiece.

Norceca’s teams came up empty in WGP |

HONG KONG, China, August 14, 2009.- China
defeated Dominican Republic 3-1 claiming its
sixth victory against only one loss in the
2009 FIVB World Grand Prix. The score was
25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 25-20.
The victory earned China a berth in the
Final Round in Japan while the Dominican
Republic dropped to 1-6 with two more
matches to play.
Ma Yunwen was the Chinese best scorer with
17 points, followed by Xue Ming with 16
(including five blocks) and Wang Yimei, who
notched 15 points.
Dominicans Annerys Vargas and Milagros
Cabral each recorded 16 tallies. Bethania de
la Cruz charted 14 and Lisvel Eve and
Altagracia Mambrú scored 13 and 11
respectively.

Cuban Coach Samuels very optimistic about his
team |

|
HAVANA, Cuba, August 13, 2009 – Cuban Head
Coach Orlando Samuels sounded very confident
about the chances of his team during the
Norceca-H third round tournament of the FIVB
2010 Men’s World Championship that kicks off
this Friday at Ciudad Deportiva Gymnasium of
Cuba’s capital.
“The objective is a clear one and only: Win
the tournament,” said Samuels during the
press conference held Thursday night.

LA HABANA, Cuba, August 12, 2009 – Cuba Team
is the heavy favorite to claim the ticket to
the Final Round of the 2010 Men’s World
Championship, when the third round NORCECA
Pool H tournament start here on Friday.
The Cubans arrive to the competition to be
played at Ciudad Deportiva after a
successful season in the 2009 edition of the
FIVB World League and several of their
players were members of the team that
finished second in the Junior World
Championship in India. Cuba is favored as
No.18 in the FIVB World Rankings and will
present the same combination that took them
to the fourth place.

Team USA to Host World Championship Qualifier
in Irvine |

IRVINE,
California, August 12, 2009 - Happy to be home
after a long 2009 World League campaign that
ended in a sixth-place finish, Team USA will not
have to travel far to compete at the 2010 Men's
World Championship Qualification Tournament for
NORCECA Pool F on Aug. 15-17.
The Bren
Events Center in Irvine, Calif., is just a few
miles down the road from the team’s training
center in Anaheim, Calif. Ranked second in the
world and first among NORCECA teams, the United
States will take on Dominican Republic (No. 4 in
NORCECA), Guatemala.

Brazil keeps dominating international scene |

|
PUNE, India, August 9, 2009 - In an epic
championship battle, Brazil edged Cuba
30-28, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-8 on Sunday
to capture the 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World
Championship gold medal at the Balewadi
Sports Complex in Pune, India.
Brazil has now won the last two FIVB Men's
Junior World Championships and four overall
(1993, 2001, 2007 and 2009). It has also won
five silver medals (1981, 1995, 1997, 1999
and 2005) and three bronze (1977, 1989 and
1999). Brazil is the only country to have
participated in all 15 editions of the
event. Meanwhile, Cuba's silver-medal
performance matches the country's best-ever
showing in the event at the 1987 tournament.
In the previous event held in 2007, Cuba
finished eighth.Five different Brazilians
scored in double figures, topped by Mauricio
Silva and Isac Santos with 19 points.

Guadeloupe and French Guyana crowned in Cazova’s
Juniors |

BAIE-MAHAULT, Guadeloupe – Hosts Guadeloupe
defeated Trinidad and Tobago 25-22, 25-22,
25-19 to claim the women’s gold medal of the
Seventh Caribbean Junior Volleyball
Championships played at the Valere Lamie
Sporting Arena. It marked the first time
that Guadeloupe has ever won the tournament.
T&T’s girls were led by another strong
serving match from captain Arielle Folkes
and accurate from Marisha Herbert and Malika
Charles, who scored 13 and 12 points
respectively.

Korea prevails in five sets against Puerto Rico |

|
OSAKA, Japan, August 9, 2009 - Korea held
off Puerto Rico and ended a run of five
straight defeats recording its first win in
the 2009 World Grand Prix at Osaka Municipal
Central Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
The Koreans missed five match points in the
third set but finally beat Puerto Rico 3-2
on their seventh match point, a right-wing
spike from southpaw La Hea-Won.
Korea's winning score was 25-18, 25-18,
24-26, 22-25, 15-13, improving their
win-loss record to 1-5.

Trinidad and Tobago set to defend title |
|
|
Defending champion Trinidad and Tobago
defeated Bahamas in straight sets tonight to
go into the women’s gold medal match on
Saturday afternoon in the Seventh Caribbean
Junior Volleyball Championship at
Baie-Mahault in Guadeloupe.
The Trinidadians had no difficulty with
Bahamas taking the victory in straight sets
25-23, 25-14, 25-18, repeating the similar
performance of the preliminary match-up.
Malika Charles and Marisha Herbert had 14
and 13 points respectively and Arielle Folks
had 8 service aces. For Bahamas, Jannis
Wilson was only able to score 8 points. In
the other semi-final match, home team
Guadeloupe had a much easier game against
French sister island team Martinique winning
in straight sets 25-16, 25-9, 25-15 in a
game which lasted 66 minutes.

Dominican Republic jumps to second place in
Youth and Junior Women’s Rankings |

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, August 8, 2009 –
There were some interesting moves up and
down the FIVB Women’s Youth and Junior World
Rankings released today, following the
completion of the Youth and Junior World
Championships in July.
The Dominican Republic made exceptional
progress after picking up silver at the
Junior Worlds. The Dominicans jumped from
8th to 2nd in the rankings. Brazil took over
as new No. 1 with a bronze-medal performance
at the 2009 FIVB Women’s Junior Volleyball
World Championship.

Cuba to play for gold medal in Men’s Junior WCH |

PUNE, India, August 8, 2009 -
Fernando Hernandez Ramos scored 20 points
and Cuba handled Argentina 25-19, 25-18,
24-26, 25-20 during the semifinals of the
FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship being
played at Balewadi Sports Complex in Pune,
India.
Cuba, which lost in three sets to Argentina
in the opening match of the tournament on
July 31, will play in the gold medal match
on Sunday against Brazil, winners over India
in five sets 25-19, 17-25, 25-19, 23-25,
15-10. Argentina will attempt to win the
bronze medal.

Puerto Rico defeats world champions Russia |

OSAKA, Japan, August 8, 2009 - Puerto Rico
pulled off a stunning upset, beating world
champions Russia 3-1 on their sixth match
point at Osaka Municipal Central Gym on
Saturday afternoon.
Puerto Rico came into the match with a 0-4
record, but outlasted Russia 25-17, 25-22,
22-25, 28-26 to record a massive victory
against the European super power.bRussia

Guadeloupe’s women top preliminary round |

Guadeloupe capped the preliminary round of
the Caribbean Junior Female Volleyball
Championship with a victory over Bahamas in
straight sets 25-9, 25-12, 25-19. The home
team finished with a 4-0 record without
losing a single set.
The best scorer from the winning side was
Ingrid Watson with 11 points, while Deanorea
Outten led Bahamas team with 7 points.

MIAO LI, Taiwan, August 7, 2009.- USA
survived five match-points to defeat
Dominican Republic during one exciting but
also erratic game by score of 25-19, 25-18,
23-25, 21-25, 23-21 in the first contest of
Pool D in the FIVB World Grand Prix.
In another match in Pool F, Japan beat
Puerto Rico in straight sets by score of
25-22, 25-21, 25-17 in only 75 minutes. The
Japanese serves kept their opponents out of
system totaling 9 aces during the match.
USA evened its win-loss record at 2-2,
Dominican Republic dropped to 1-3 and Puerto
Rico remained winless in four outings.

Cuba advances to India’s semi finals |

After the second round final day of the he
FIVB Men’s Junior World Championship on
Thursday at Pune, India, the semifinalists
became known and the rest of the
classification fields were determined.
While Brazil and Cuba both qualified for the
semifinals on Wednesday, Argentina and India
both had to win Thursday to advance to the
gold bracket. The top two teams in Pools E
and F advanced to the semifinals that begin
Saturday, while the bottom two countries
will battle for positions 5-8. Argentina
dropped Russia 25-19, 25-23, 25-18.

Dominican Republic vs. USA in second leg of
World Grand Prix |

MIAO LI, Taiwan, August 7, 2009 – Dominican
Republic meets USA in the first match of
Chinese Taipei’s leg of the 2009 World Grand
Prix, the premier annual FIVB women’s
competition.
Both teams are coming from 1-2 win-loss
records in the first weekend of preliminary
pool play in China and Brazil respectively.
The Dominicans won against Korea after
losing to China and Russia (five sets) in
Pool C, while the Americans scored a win
over Puerto Rico in five sets sandwiched by
losses to Brazil and Germany in Pool A in
consecutive frames.
Puerto Rico lost its three matches in Pool A
against hosts Brazil, USA and Germany –the
last two in five sets- and now plays against
hosts Japan, Korea and Russia in Osaka.

Three French Territories in the Semi Finals |

Guadeloupe who ranked third in Group A was

Barbados in the first quarterfinals game.
The host team prevailed in five sets by

we have had difficult games in order to

Defending Champions cruise past Bahamas |

Caribbean Junior Volleyball Championship at
Baie-Mahault in Guadeloupe started with the
defending champions Trinidad and Tobago
defeating Bahamas 25-19, 25-21, 25-12. The
Trinidadians started the game with a new
vigour from the first two games they played.
Merisha Herbert was the best player of
Trinidad & Tobago with 17 points. Also
making the difference for TTO were Captain
Ariel Folkes and Samantha Prescott each with
four service aces. Jannis Wilson had 9
points for Bahamas.
